Dalai Lama to visit Sikkim, Government reviews preparedness

Gangtok, March 18, 2013: - The Chief Secretary of Sikkim, Rinchen Ongmu visited Rabong on the 16th March 2013 to take stock of the preparedness for the visit of HH Dalai Lama who is scheduled to consecrate the Statue of Lord Buddha on 26th March 2013.


During her visit the Chief Secretary inspected the road condition of Rabong Bazaar, the helipad and also the Tibetan Settlement. She also took a brief meeting with the District Officials and other senior officials involved in the managing of the event. The focuses of the meeting were in the areas of security, traffic arrangements, accommodation and hospitality of devotees and visitors.

The programme of HH Dalai Lama is as follows:

24th March: Arrival at Rabongla
25th March: 8.30 am to 12 noon: Tsewang
1 pm to 3 pm: Teachings
26th March: 9 am: Consecration Ceremony
26th March: Departure for Gangtok
27th March: 9.30 am: Departure from Gangtok

For the purpose of smooth flow of traffic the Superintendent of Police, South has proposed to arrange for parking at four designated places around Rabong Bazaar from where the visitors will be provided with Bus service to the Buddha Park. The general public will be allowed entry from Gate No. 1 and Gate no. 2 only.

In order to ease congestion of devotees’ visitors will be allowed to enter the venue as early as from 4 am in the morning.

The Chief Secretary underlined the necessity of conducting the programme in a smooth and streamlined manner so as to cause the minimum diszcomfort to the devotees and visitors. The State level function is to be attended by the Chief Minister who is also the Chairman of the Sakyamuni Project. The Governor is also to grace the occasion.

The preparedness meeting was also attended by D.D.Bhutia, Vice Chairman, Sakyamuni Project, T.T. Dorji, Former Chief Secretary and area MLA  Sonam Gyatso Bhutia.
